The founding ethic and editorial style of Comerado

I founded Comerado as a publication dedicated to democracy and democratic culture. Its orientation is generally liberal, but that is a byproduct of its commitment to democracy. For collaborations, no political orientation is verboten, so long as the commitment to democracy is both ruthless and rational. The current realities of global politics mean that it will generally trend strongly to the left.

I didn’t make that choice. If you don’t like it, there are many other things for you to read.

The name “Comerado” is taken from Walt Whitman’s addressee in Leaves of Grass.

Editorial style

I’m not a headline merchant. I do love a great title, but as a matter of principle, Comerado will use a thesis-style for headlines.

Readers should know what they’re getting before they begin reading. See the headline of this very page.

Principles

Democracy is non-negotiable.

Democracy is the right par excellence. It is the right that begets rights. It cannot be morally diminished or abrogated. For the same reason you cannot sell yourself into slavery, you cannot vote away democracy. But as a concept and process, it obviously cannot manifest its own defense. It must be defended by its people; with prejudice if necessary.

The solution to any problems downstream of democracy is more democracy, applied differently. In so many words, checks and balances. A large part of the mission of Comerado is exploring methods for applying democracy as a stabilizer of democratic systems.

I am committed to the perpetual betterment of human beings and our societies, and believe zealously in our capacity to rise to any occasion. No human being has ever stood in the presence of a superior. Ours is to be the nation of the cosmos.
